  • Ship breaking activity was carried out in 1994.
  • 7 Ships were broken and derived Rs. 5.26 Crores by both Central and State Governments.
  • In 1996 Vodarevu Port was declared as specialized port for ship breaking unit hence ship breaking unit was discarded at Kakinada.
  • Environmental Clearance was not accorded by Government of India for Vodarevu.
  • Hence it is proposed to restart the ship breaking activity at Kakinada.
  • M/s. NSDRC has conducted the feasibility study and suggested the following
  • 1.8 KM beach from Vakalapudi to Uppada has been selected for ship breaking units.
  • 20 Plots of size 80m x 60m are earmarked for each unit (80m waterfront)
  • 2 to 3 ships can be broken in each plot in a year.
  • About Rs. 22.0 Crores of Revenue is expected.
  • Direct Employment for 3000 members
  • Indirect Employment for 2500 members.
  • Action is being initiated to obtain environmental clearance under CRZ regulations, air & water pollution.
